Secondary Transfer

We are spoilt for choice in this area with all of our local secondary schools judged to be good or outstanding and all are vibrant and high achieving places to learn. Our children leave Telferscot well prepared for their next phase of education, with high academic achievement and well developed social skills.

Finding the right secondary school is quite a lengthy process. Children sit admissions tests as early as September in Year 6. With this in mind, during Year 5 we encourage and support parents to familiarise themselves with their most local secondary schools. This can be done by browsing school websites, reading recent Ofsted reports and checking out School Open days.

Your local council website is the best place to find more details about the secondary school application process. It can feel like an overwhelming task so we work hard to make the process of selection and then application as stress free as possible. We run information meetings, coffee mornings and send out information about key dates. All applications are made through “E-Admissions”, regardless of which borough our families live in and we are happy to help parents by providing access to a computer and support completing the on-line application if it’s needed.

Verbal & Non- Verbal Reasoning Tests

If you would like more information on the Verbal and Non Verbal tuition that the school can provide to help prepare Year 5 children for the secondary school admission tests, please contact the school office.

Key dates

The e-admissions deadline normally falls at the end of October each year (for our Year 6 pupils).

It is vital that this deadline is not missed. If you miss the October deadline, your child's application will not be looked at until after National Offer Day when the vast majority of places have been filled.

If you missed the e-admissions deadline and applied late, your application will be processed after the National Offer Day and an outcome letter sent in due course afterwards. There are no set timescales for outcome letters to be sent. If you applied online before the deadline, you will be sent the official outcome of your child's CAF electronically on National Offer Day, usually at the beginning of March. If you applied on time using a paper CAF an outcome letter will be posted first class at the beginning of March.

Supporting transition in the final term of Year 6

After the National school offer date we continue to support families and children with appeals if necessary and liaison with their new schools to ensure all information with regards to their needs and abilities are passed on. Our final term of Year 6 is designed with transition in mind, supporting children to feel positive and ready for their next challenge.

Our core curriculum continues but with additional sessions on:
First aid workshops

Safe travel seminars

Support to get oyster cards (Zip cards)

Prep for organising yourself!
